This large scale choral work Canticles of the Holy Wind is a special commission made by choir Kamēr… and its artistic director Jānis Liepiņš to the American composer John Luther Adams.
This new 70-minutes musical piece that was created specifically for the choir Kamēr… is spatial and ambitious and is composed in vocalise form. To appreciate the unexploited boundaries of human voice the composer included cantos mimicking the sounds of birds, wind and other natural phenomenon, thus creating sonic and visual paintings that reflects the unique beauty and majesty of nature. The composition requires musicians to move around the space and to use varied vocal combinations such as complete choir, smaller choir group and soloists. According to the composer’s idea and philosophy of composition this performance is going to be executed in the stage design of light and laser projections.
The large scale composition is almost completely vocal, supplemented with minor percussion parts. It doesn’t contain text which makes it internationally convertible and understandable around the world. In order to set new challenges to choir Kamēr… and its listeners and to reveal the beautiful possibility of enjoying classical / academic music a new venue has been chosen. The former Tobacco factory has never been exploited for the academic choir concert before and its atmosphere and industrial settings are perfectly suitable for stage design of this performance.
The creative team of world premier in Tobacco factory consists of a conductor Jānis Liepiņš, a stage director Margo Zālīte, an artist and stage designer who is rich with original ideas Gints Gabrāns, and a designer of visual events – Ilmārs Blumbergs.
