On March 3, 18.00 for the first time one of the most popular and most prominent new generation cellists - Nicolas Altstaedt from Germany – will be performing in Latvia at Riga St. Peter church. Not only Altsteadt is a splendid musician, but since 2011 he became the new artistic director of the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival (Austira), inheriting this position from his musical confederate Gidon Kremer.
Altsteadt will be performing together with the youth choir Kamēr…, playing one of the most colourful musical scores for cello and choir – The Canticle of the Sun of St Francis of Assisi by Sofia Gubaidulina – and they will be accompanied by two percussionists Rihards Zaļupe and Edgars Saksons and a celesta player Mārtiņš Zilberts. This Gubaidulina’s composition started the creative friendship between Kamēr… and Aletstaedt and is still maintaining it. For the first time they met in summer 2010 at the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival where they performed the composition. It also has been recorded then by ECM. After the concert in Riga this cooperation will be continued at the Imagio Dei Easter musical festival, held in Krems, Austira, in the middle of March.
Along with cello and choir there will be performing a violin virtuoso Eva Bindere at the concert, playing compositions by Pēteris Vasks.
