Riga Chamber Choir AVE SOL was founded in 1969 by professor Imants Kokars (1921-2011). The main task of the choir would be to encourage Latvian composers to write contemporary choral music to extend the Latvian choir’s repertoire. Latvian choral music afforces with many musical works of high quality, a considerable number of them devoted to Ave Sol.
Ave Sol singers have always been the best Latvian professional choir singers and conductors, occasionally including a few opera soloists or composers (Anita Garanča, Elga Brahmane, Ingus Pētersons, Uldis Stabulnieks etc.).
In the last years, Ave Sol has given performances both online and in person, ranging from a simple lullaby in a sacred music concert and ending at the opera, especially the most recent productions of two Latvian operas by Imants Kalniņš.
Professor and conductor Andris Veismanis, the artistic director of Ave Sol since 2013 and a conductor at the Latvian National Opera, is an expert in both early music and contemporary scores. Together with his assistant, conductor Jurģis Cābulis, both have led Ave Sol through an evolution towards a new and bright sound in the Latvian choral culture.
